Twitter can be a business’s best friend when it comes to marketing and getting the word out about your products and services. Twitter can be cost efficient and massively effective for generating leads and ultimately revenue.  Although tweets don’t go viral like social media platforms such as Facebook or YouTube, the social reach of tweets can be powerful.

Because of the algorithms used by other Social Media platforms, not everyone may see or find your post on other sites. Unlike Facebook, with Twitter, you get followers and they see what you post, simple. So if you are looking to get impressions without having to pay a lot of money for it, using Twitter as a way of having people see your message is a great option. Twitter is massively effective at generating traffic for your website and generating leads.

We think of Twitter as a micro-blogging site. You have 280 characters to summarize your thoughts and relay a concise message to your target audience.

With those statistics alone, you should want your business on Twitter.

For those of you that need more, here are reasons why your business needs to be on Twitter.

1. You Can Connect With Customers

For a business, this is main reason why you would do anything on social media. It’s advertising that you don’t have to pay an arm and a leg for. Directly advertising to your followers, your current and future customers. The great thing about Twitter is that you can connect with them and not have to wait for them to find you. It would be like someone walking past your brick and mortar establishment, not noticing your business and you saying something to get their attention. You connect with potential customers and can talk directly to them.

2. Create Brand Awareness

Just by creating and setting up your Twitter account, you are helping to brand your image.

  • Upload a profile picture. This image will represent you and your business, so make it a good one. Using your company logo will make the account seem more professional, while a head-shot will make it seem more approachable.
  • Write your bio. Your bio will tell people about your business and what you do. This gives viewers a quick impression of what you do and what they can expect when they follow you on Twitter. This is a big factor in getting more followers since your bio shows up in recommendations from Twitter and when people search for topics.
  • Upload a background. This is the space at the very top of the account and takes up a lot of real-estate. Make that space count and upload something that represents your business, your brand and helps sell.

Once your account is set up, keep the brand intact by posting content relevant to your brand. Too many businesses get sidetracked with unrelated topics. When I see a technology company posting lots of celebrity related topics, that’s not an account I want to follow. Keep your account focused on what you actually do to build your brand and your brand loyalty.

3. Build Relationships

The great thing about Twitter is that it gives people access to one another. It allows people to connect and to interact and it allows everyone to build relationships with people and businesses that they might not otherwise be able to. This goes both ways, so interact with your followers and build that relationship.

4. Become An Expert In Your Field

Become an expert in your field or topic by providing valuable information that followers will find useful. Have your company become better recognized and trusted in your field and you may soon find yourself as the person people recognize as a leader in the industry.

5. Market Your Products & Services

Let your followers know what your business is all about. Share your products and services and let them know just how much you can help them. Direct marketing of your business to the consumer. The best part about this marketing is that it is FREE! There is a paid option of promoting your account through Twitter as well if you feel you are not getting the results you are looking for. The alternative is to have someone else run your account for you. Bottom line is that this is incredibly cost effective advertising.

6. Get Customer Feedback

Hear about your products, services and get feedback directly from the consumer. They may even tell you directly. This is a great way to keep tabs on and help manage your on-line reputation. If you want to get specific feedback, Twitter has a built in survey tool  to Tweet a quick and convenient survey. This could be a great way to find out what your followers are looking for and ways to improve your business.

7. Boost Sales – Discounts or Special Offers

I think everyone knows the power of a sale or special offer and what it can do to create new customers for businesses. Twitter is a great way of announcing and promoting your special offer. Get the word out by adding URL’s to your tweet directing consumers to your landing page. Use hashtags like #SocialMediaROC and images to get peoples attention. Don’t forget that images help sell your product, use them!

8. Provide Great Customer Support

If you already have customer support, using Twitter can really offer the next level in service. When a customer has a good or bad experience with your business, they often post it on social media. If you are actively monitoring your account you can respond and solve customer issues fast in what can seem to the customer as ridiculously good customer support.

I was once teaching a seminar where there was an issue with the heating. The people who had brought me in to teach it said that they had already called trying to get it fixed with no success. A quick tweet later to the company managing the building, a response 5 minutes later and a work crew was there to fix the building 20 minutes after that. That day, my view of Twitter as a customer service tool was strongly reinforced.

9. Create Networking Opportunities

Twitter is a great way to get in direct contact with anyone. On Twitter, you have a way of contacting and potentially networking with anyone you can think of. If you’ve been doing a good job with reasons 1 through 8 of why you should be on Twitter, networking opportunities can start to pop up.

10. Google Really Likes Twitter

Google has a high regard for Twitter profiles, when you search on Google these profiles often show up at the top of their search results. Try searching your name, if you have an active Twitter account it, that account will show up near the top of the search results. Bottom line, Twitter helps you get found on Google searches.

11. Improve Your Google Ranking

Google has been a bit vague on how they use Social Media metrics to determine ranking and to what degree. Although in February 2015, Twitter and Google struck a deal and Google gained access to Twitters data stream. We all know that Google uses a complex algorithm made up of over 200 “signals” to determine page ranking on search results. This is a debatable topic, but since no one has or will come out and say exactly what “signals” Google is looking at, we have to speculate that with Googles access to all of Twitters data, how can Google not incorporate some of it into it’s algorithm.
